Under the military, Brazil had big ambitions for nuclear power, and commissioned several power stations from former West Germany. Energy from these has been more expensive than expected. Hydropower has been more successful, accounting for 90% of electricity generation. A 1,364-mile pipeline from the Bolivian gas fields to Brazil's industrial south has been proposed, but Brazil is unable to finance the multi-billion dollar project from public funds; its constitution prevents private ownership of energy assets. Ethanol is being made from sugar in an attempt to reduce gasoline imports. Within the agricultural sector, Brazil is the world's largest producer of both coffee and soybeans.
